Our Story

We are Lulu & Keith a wife & husband team who exist to offer natural alternatives to skin-health & zero waste offerings from within our Apothecary.

We have taken our love for bees, plants, and for re-wilding natural areas, infusing them together to create Lulubee.

Our connection to the natural world has taken us on a journey. Turning to plants, insects and wildlife for their teachings.

Lulu’s experience… “ In 2011 I had the opportunity to attend a beekeeping workshop in my home town Durban, KwaZulu Natal. It was a practical “hands on” experience, where learning began immediately, opening hives, observing bees, and engaging in considerate beekeeping practises, from this time on my admiration for these exquisite creatures grew, I knew I was destined to work with bees.

My search for botanical ingredients took me on many curious walks within our homestead garden in the valley of Giba Gorge. I made notes of the plants that grew naturally and reacquainted myself with the ones we had planted.

I began to forage, research and experiment with various plant allies, discovering each one’s benefits “

Putting our herbalism knowledge into practice we went on to create our Lulubee skin-health range. The skin healing properties of plants are the foundation for our wildcrafted offerings

We believe in providing sustainable alternatives our reusable beeswax wraps prolong the life of food, reduce the amount of food waste and single use plastic. Committed to taking our sustainable offerings a step further by practicing mindfulness. The cotton for each reusable wrap is firstly naturally dyed using seasonally sourced plants. Reducing our footprint on the earth to a bare minimum leaving more space for nature to spread her wings.

Our Ingredients

Nature provides all the ingredients for the products that we offer.

Bees & Plants

The relationship between Bees and Plants is a symbiotic one, supportive to our existence on the earth. South Africa is home to two sub-species: African honeybee, Apis mellifera Scutellata situated in the KwaZulu Natal region; and the Cape honeybee, Apis mellifera Capensis.

Honeybees are responsible for pollinating a third of everything we eat. It is not only food crops that rely on bee pollination, plants do as well.

Plant ~ Flower ~ Pollination ~ Fruit ~ Seed = Life Cycle

Pollination is needed in order for plants to reproduce. When a bee or other insects visit a flower, they collect pollen and nectar. The pollen from the flower stamen sticks to the bee’s body. The bee then visits the same flower species and the transfer of pollen occurs onto another flower’s stigma. Fertilisation takes place and the Cycle of Life continues.

Plants feed our need more than just replenish our oxygen. They are an essential resource for all of life’s well-being. Plants help clean the air, retain soil, and create habitats and shelter for wildlife. Their medicinal properties are food and nourishment for our skins and health.

Bees can be considered natural “pharmacists” whilst their beehives a “laboratory” for natural medicines.

Honeybees make honey, beeswax, propolis, royal jelly and bee venom. They harvest pollen and nectar as a food source for themselves and their young. Throughout ancient times, the honey bee has been revered. This sacred insect has provided us with ingredients which have been utilised in the making of natural remedies, food, religious ceremonies and art.

Bee Conscious, Plant!

Gardens are extremely important for bees. Plant a variety of indigenous flowering plants in your garden. Pot plants are great if you’re in a small space, or plant up your verge if you have one. These plants will provide a constant source of food for bees, thereby sustaining the courtship between Bees and Plants.

Zero Waste

Reduce, Refuse, Reuse, Recycle and Rot are the principles which we at Lulubee support. With the increasing amount of plastic waste being generated, impacting our earth & oceans, a new consciousness is growing. We are constantly looking for alternatives, asking questions and taking steps towards Zero Waste packaging within the Lulubee range.

These zero waste principles extend to our packaging too.

Integrity extends to our packaging, we have chosen glass as well as other recyclable packaging for all our Lulubee skin-health products. Glass retains the natural ingredient’s qualities, whereas plastic containers de-nature products. Recyclable packaging is used selectively and, like glass, can be repurposed and completely recycled.

Our Lulubee reusable beeswax food and bread wraps are part of the change we want to see, alternative solution to the way we store our food.

At Lulubee we embrace sustainable alternatives:
Waste Free. Plastic Free.
